Regional Security and Cooperation in the European Neighbourhood

This project aimed at studying the role of emerging regional constellations in the greater European neighbourhood, and their contribution to the EU neighbourhood strategy and to European security and integration at large. At the empirical level, the analysis focused on four emerging regional groupings: the Northern Dimension, the Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Black Sea regions. Russia’s case was particularly stressed, was it is relevant to at least three of these regions and has major strategic implications for European security as a whole. At the theoretical level, both objectives were attained through an analysis of regionalism in the light of the regional security interdependence. At the methodological level, this study relied on discourse analysis and case-study research. The project was carried out at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels. It led to nine academic publications and to the grant-holder’s active participation to over a dozen international conferences and seminars.
